UTI drug displays promising results in combatting fatal brain-eating amoeba

In a recent study, researchers successfully treated a patient in its mid 50 infected with the deadly brain-eating amoeba, using a repurposed drug typically used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs).

The patient was given the drug, called nitroxoline, along with other medications, and was able to make a full recovery.

This is significant because deadly brain-eating amoeba is a rare but highly lethal amoeba that typically kills its victims within a week of infection, and there are currently no effective treatments for the infection.

While this is a single case report and further research is needed, the results are promising and suggest that nitroxoline could be a potential treatment option for Naegleria fowleri infections.
